This weekend brings tears and laughter in Netflix’s newest movie and TV releases, which are a mix of heartfelt drama with some comedy thrown in. There’s Ricky Gervais series After Life, Alfre Woodard-led comedy-drama film Juanita, and the true story-based Walk. Ride. Rodeo. Last week’s big Netflix release was another film based on a true story, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which marks the feature directorial debut of actor Chiwetel Ejiofor....

The Netflix beta, which just went live, offers a mobile data saver feature. It apparently lowers the bwidth available to the app when you’re not on -Fi. The update also adds support for ay billing, though it’s unclear if this will mean a higher price for you to make up for the 30 percent cut that takes on subscriptions delivered through the ay Store. If you want in on the action, however, you have some work ahead of you....

Netflix is reshaping the world of online streaming as it continues to expand its original programming. Posting strong numbers from its collaborations with Marvel, the service is also making waves with original films and stand-up comedy. Stand up specials from Amy Schumer and Dave Chapelle are tracking well, while Netflix’s exclusive Adam Sandler films have been viewed over half a billion times. 13 Reasons Why was another smashing success for Netflix, as well as Marvel’s Iron Fist despite poor critical reception....

Images have recently emerged showing new Lexus SUVs being used by Apple that feature an updated array of sensors and cameras on top. While Apple has been using such vehicles for some time now, these new cars seemingly feature a much more elaborate and advanced sensor setup. The updated Lexus car was first spotted near Apple offices in Sunnyvale, California by MacRumors. As we’ve reported in the past, Apple has leased several buildings of office space in Sunnyvale for work on its car efforts, though the fate of that project is currently somewhat unclear....

New Mutants writer/director Josh Boone teases the beginning of pre-production on 20th Century Fox’s upcoming X-Men series film. Logan is just the latest movie in the X-Men franchise, but it definitely won’t be the last. Even though Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart, as Wolverine and Professor X, have now said goodbye to the characters they first portrayed almost 17 years ago, a whole new set of actors are now ready to take the series in multiple directions....

Safari First announced in June, macOS Big Sur is perhaps the most significant operating system update for Mac in a generation. Featuring a redesign that feels lighter and more robust than previous versions, macOS Big includes everything from updated menu bars and sounds to reimagined apps such as Messages and Maps. The changes brought forth in the Safari app are also significant, although they don’t change the fundamentals of web surfing on a desktop....

A lot of viewers were surprised today to learn that many popular apps are going to be returning to the Mac App Store. Over the past few months, it has seemed like app after app has decided to forge ahead with direct to customer sales (see past 9to5mac coverage). At WWDC, Apple announced that a brand new Mac App store would be launching later this fall. They also announced that apps will also be coming to the Mac App Store such as Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Lightroom CC, Barebones BB Edit, Transmit, and also new games....

Niantic, the studio behind Pokémon GO, announced today that it has acquired augmented reality startup 6D.ai. As TechCrunch reports, this San Francisco-based startup had focused on creating technology that would allow smartphones to quickly detect 3D layouts. It’s easy to see how Niantic can use the 6D.ai technology in its suite of mobile games, including Pokémon GO. Over the next month, Niantic will shut down 6D.ai’s existing developer tools and instead work to integrate the technology with the Niantic Real World Platform....

If you’ve been finding yourself killed in Fortnite before you have a chance to figure out how to play, Epic Games now has a solution. It’s today launched a multi-player practice mode, called Playground … The developer says you get an hour of infinite lives. Version 4.5 also adds new weapons, and map markers. You’ll have one hour to create, play and train as you wish. Drop into the Battle Royale map with a squad of friends for an hour....

X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner is hopeful upcoming spinoff The New Mutants will still get a theatrical release, after reports the movie was heading straight to Hulu. Both New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix have been problematic productions for Fox. New Mutants was pitched as a horror-infused take on the superhero genre, with director Josh Boone claiming he took inspiration from horror sequel A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors....

After some confusion over a tweet about upcoming Netflix series The Witcher, the streamer has revealed that no official premiere date has been announced. Based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is a fantasy series that focuses on Geralt of Rivia. Geralt is a monster hunter and one of the last witchers left on the Continent. The series is made up of both books and short stories and has been adapted for film, TV, comic books, and video games in the past....

Netflix has released a trailer for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile that confirms the film’s release date. The streaming service has enjoyed a great deal of success with its true crime documentary series in the past, with Making a Murderer being the most famous example. More recently, the streamer premiered Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, a 4-part series composed of archival footage of the serial killer Ted Bundy, as well as interviews with his surviving victims and loved ones....

Although IoT does play a crucial role in human life, detecting IoT attacks and ensuring security has become a bottleneck for incident responders (IR) and security engineers. Unfortunately, no network is 100% secure in the face of cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities. The conventional internet is insecure and IoT networks are even more insecure due to resource-constrained characteristics. Note that we say resource-constrained IoT due to their small size and tiny components....

The CTO, long a broad-based role overlapping with that of chief information officers, is emerging as a leading player in the growth and viability of digital enterprises. A recent survey of 5,000 CTOs and CIOs by the IBM Institute for Business Value bears this out, stating that “the CTO has become one of the most strategic roles within an organization.” This “may come as a revelation for some,” the report’s authors, led by Rashik Parmar, an IBM Fellow....

Microsoft today announced that with Build 16251 of Windows 10, it will allow “linking” your Android phone to your PC. The linking will allow for a cross-browsing experience similar to Apple’s Continuity feature. This means that once you go through the process of linking your phone to your Windows 10 PC, which includes installing an app on your handset, you will be able to easily share links that you are browsing on your phone to your PC....

The Nexus leaks keep flowing in. If today’s accidental Play Store listing was not enough, we now have pictures of the retail packaging of the Nexus 5. The images were posted at underkg.com, and have been since then removed dutifully. The images show off the retail packaging of the white Nexus 5, hinting that Google might just simultaneously release both the versions at once, unlike it did with the white Nexus 4 or the Galaxy Nexus....

Back in December of 2016, Google released Android 7.1.1 Nougat to a variety of different Nexus-branded devices, but the Nexus 6 wasn’t included in the first wave. An issue with the software caused the delay, but Google eventually confirmed that the software would still arrive on the hardware. Google said it would be sometime in “early January,” and, sure enough, the update is now arriving for the Nexus 6 out in the wild....

The NHL iOS app is getting a significant upgrade. While more video is the headline feature, there are a couple of other reasons for ice hockey fans to be happy … Engadget reports the redesign is timed to coincide with the new season. The app is also adding Apple Watch support, displaying summaries, events and scoreboards. But if scores are the last thing you want to see because you’re planning to watch a match later, the revamped app offers the ability to switch them off in notifications....
