A new survey from Loup Ventures aims to offer color on what percentage of Apple’s current iPhone users plan to upgrade to this year’s yet-to-be-announced models. The survey ultimately indicates that the iPhone is “settling into a lower growth, more predictable rhythm.” Loup Ventures surveyed a total of 511 people in the United States, 226 of which currently own an iPhone. The results show that 22 percent of current iPhone users intend to upgrade their device come this fall when Apple announces new models for its iPhone lineup....

Back in December, the New World devs announced that they’d made some changes to the PvP system - a coveted mechanic - in the game following its alpha phase. Turns out, they saw a lot of high-level players griefing low-level players, so much so that it produced a pretty toxic online culture. So, they were changing things up, and a lot of their changes were covered in the video below. PvP will be less of a focus for the game, and players will have to actually turn the feature on once they reach a high enough level....

But the details of how Apple University works and what the school teaches have been mostly hidden from the spotlight. Today, The New York Times has published a fairly extensive profile of Apple University, which is well-worth a read. Apple University is run by former Yale business school dean Joel Podolny, and Podolny took a full-time role as Dean of Apple University earlier this year as he handed off his former Human Resources responsibilities to Denise Young-Smith....

The latest Netflix prediction is that the streaming service could lose as many as 4 million subscribers in 2020. Netflix has come under heightened pressure recently due to the increase in the number of new streaming services. The problem for Netflix is a lot of these new arrivals are priced far lower than Netflix. This has led to many suggesting these services will affect Netflix’s subscriber growth, leading to some being referred to as “Netflix killers....

There are people—yours truly included—who felt genuinely dumbfounded having read both the authorized “Steve Jobs” biography by Walter Isaacson and Adam Lashinsky’s “Inside Apple.” Do not get me wrong, Isaacson and Lashinsky are among the best contemporary wordsmiths, and their work enlightened us with some previously unknown details about the inner-workings of Apple and the man who cofounded it. Nonetheless, the authors dedicated way too many pages to the stuff we already knew, and their writing style may not appeal to the Technorati accustomed to fast-paced news reporting and sensationalist headlines....

Apple touts that Face ID is even more secure than Touch ID was, with there being a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of a different person being able to unlock someone else’s iPhone X with Face ID. A new video posted to Reddit, however, shows Face ID failing to properly differentiate between siblings… In the video, you can see Face ID unlock the iPhone X for both siblings....

When it was discovered that the Pixel and Pixel XL use the same fingerprint sensor as the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, owners of the last Nexus handsets from Google demanded that the company add the handy ‘Swipe for notifications’ fingerprint gesture found on the Pixels to the 6P and 5X. Back then, Google stated that due to a firmware difference it was not possible to bring the same gesture to its Nexus handsets, though the company was “evaluating” a firmware update for the handsets....

Comcast cable TV customers can expect to pay more for their service in 2020 as the company shifts its focus to its new NBC Peacock streaming service. Over the last couple of years, Comcast has seen a major decline in its cable TV subscribers and now the company looks set to fully embrace the world of streaming, albeit at the cost of existing cable customers. Netflix’s The Two Popes cast is led by two iconic actors, who are joined by an impressive list of supporting actors. Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (City of God) and written by Anthony McCarten (Bohemian Rhapsody), the Netflix drama features two legendary actors as historical Vatican figures. The Two Popes explores the friendship between Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. As the Catholic Church experiences scandal after scandal, the head of the Vatican muses about the future, and if he’s making the right decisions....

Fox has a big year coming up, with Logan (out this week), War for the Planet of the Apes (out July), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (October) and Murder on the Orient Express (November) still to come, but one film they seem particularly confident with is Alien: Covenant. Ridley Scott’s second return to the franchise that made him, the film was originally set for release in August (a time for risky box office prospects), but was bumped up to a prime May spot....

Apple ran a new, minute-long Apple Music commercial during last night’s Country Music Association Awards, featuring hit country music singer-songwriter Kenny Chesney. In the ad – filmed this summer at his concert at the Gillette Stadium in Foxboro MA, home of the super bowl champions New England Patriots – Chesney focuses on the human curation offered by Apple Music. The ad, which can be found on iTunes and watched below, also features a cameo appearance by the Apple Watch, Chesney using it to check his Activity rings....

New iOS 9 Features 3D Touch Earlier this year, Apple introduced us to force touch on the Apple Watch then brought similar functionality to its Early 2015 MacBook laptops. 3D touch shares a similar capability on the iPhone 6s by providing access to quick action menus on apps. When you add a certain amount of pressure on an app icon, it will present a list of common tasks you can complete, such as a Selfie menu for the Camera app, a Post on FaceBook or New Message/Tweet on Twitter....

The Correlium team has today released a beta of a work-in-progress hack to get the Android operating system running on the iPhone. Using the checkra1n jailbreak exploit to gain access to the bootloader of older iPhone models, Project Sandcastle lets you install a semi-working version of Android on an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus. Support for additional phone models is in the works. Obviously, proceed at your own risk. Even more so than a standard jailbreak, you can imagine the potential for stuff to go wrong here is significant....

Prototype iPhone 4 from last year The next generation iPhone has reached the final testing stage (aka “AP” stage [Thanks, Chronic!]) and is now being carried around by high level Apple and carrier executives. Although this has been assumed since the no-iPhone-at-WWDC-rumors broke, the current plan is for a September launch for the next-generation iPhone. Apple and Verizon have yet to strike a deal regarding FaceTime over 3G for the Verizon network....

The company just announced a beta tester program on it’s community forums. You’ll need to own a Robin, of course, fill out an application form that includes your name, IMEI number, serial number, mobile carrier, other details. Nextbit cautions that chosen testers will encounter bugs, are expected to provide feedback to the development team. This change hopefully alludes to a refresh on the horizon, because one is long overdue: the Nexus 10 launched in November 2012 it still hasn’t seen a do-over. And with the recent revelation that is only supporting its Nexus devices up to 18 months after release, the end is likely nigh. There’s no word on which company would produce it, though there are reports that Asus will remain the de facto tablet maker for ’s developer-centric products....

A two-sentence notice on Niantic’s support website hints at a major update to Pokémon Go. While that might not seem much of a clue, it is when viewed in context … Niantic said at last month’s TNW conference that the company planned to extend the multi-player functionality of the game – and that gyms would play a key role in this.
