New Netflix Parental Control Options
The company already offers a robust set of parental controls like the ability to create a kids user account as well as a Just for Kids section. When a parent makes an account for their child, they can choose content that offers programs that are suitable for their age. The parent chooses the type of programming based on the standard rating system we’re all used to, i.e. PG, PG-13 for movies or TV-Y, TV-G, TV-PG for television shows. If the child were to try to access unsuitable content, they would need to enter the secret PIN of the parent.
The parental control system is being improved to where the parent can set a PIN code on individual movies or TV shows. That will give the parent more control over what their child can watch. For example, even if a show gets a PG rating, you as the parent might not approve of the subject matter. “We understand that every family is different and that parents have differing perspectives on what they feel is appropriate to watch at different ages. While we already provide PIN protection for all content at a particular maturity level for Netflix accounts, PIN protection for a specific series or film provides families with an additional tool to make decisions they are comfortable, wrote Mike Hasting in the Netflix announcement. Netflix will also display the maturity rating for movies and TV in the top-left corner when the title begins to play. This will bring increased visibility of how it’s rating and reason for it – i.e., language, violence, rude humor.
